Many construction projects are underway in Woodward, including amazing new hotels, excellent golf, and great places to eat and shop. Woodward History
It is not exactly sure how the town of Woodward received its name, but the most popular belief is that the community was named after the Woodward brothers. The Woodwards came into the Kansas area after serving in the Confederate Army. Hugh Woodward became a freighter and hauled to Fort Supply and cow camps. Hugh Woodward and a friend were out hunting buffalo in the vicinity when a blizzard hit. Woodward, dismayed with the blizzard posted a sign that read “5 miles to Hell: 25 miles to Heaven” and signed it. Thus, the community was named. Many people helped establish Woodward and names for themselves. Temple Houston came to Woodward from Texas and established himself as an attorney. Jack Love was elected one of the first corporation commissioners for Oklahoma in 1907. Billy Bolton launched “The Livestock Bulletin” which was the very first of its kind in the southwest.
